Mavuno Church

6-16-08
Yesterday we got to attend Mavuno (harvest in Swahili) Church in Nairobi. It was truly a God-experience at that church. They are most assuredly experiencing the blessings of the Lord in this place. In just three weeks that church has grown from a little under 400 people to over 1,000 people. I know that the church should not be judged by numbers alone, but when you are following the leading of the Holy Spirit, those around you are drawn to the glory of the Lord. The impact can be great if we obey. These people truly have an amazing impact here in the city of Nairobi. They meet outside in a tent and they have just moved to a site where an old drive-in movie theater used to be.
Kanjii, the “face” of Milele, is the worship pastor at Mavuno church, and let me just say that the worship there was unbelievable. They are truly following God and experiencing his power working through them. After the service we had lunch at the church and we attended a small group leaders’ meeting. They have broken the church down into a bunch of people that lead small groups. These people are the real shepherds of the church. These guys have really learned how to “do” church. Proverbs 16.3 says that we need to “commit” our ways to the Lord and then our plans will succeed. The word “commit” in the Hebrew means literally “to give” or “to let roll off.” The meaning of the word is very intentional with the action of committing. It is an action, a literal undertaking of letting go and giving it to God. It is an act of obedience. This was our verse of the day, and I love getting into that scripture and letting the Holy Spirit do what He needs to do in my life in order for me to follow Him completely.
